In April the show of the month was quite possibly the Japanese triple header with Hozumi Hasegawa, Takahiro Aoh and Toshiaki Nishioka in 3 WBC title fights. To start May we again have a cracking Japanese card that could arguably rival anything being shown in the US during the same month. The card features rising Japanese stars Tomoki Kameda (18-0, 12) and Masao Nakamura (12-0, 12) as well as a Japanese world champion. The bout of interest for this site is the main even that sees 3-weight world champion Koki Kameda (24-1, 15) making the first defence of his WBA Bantamweight title when he faces Nicaraguan challenger Daniel Diaz (18-2, 13).

Koki Kameda, the oldest of the 3 Kameda brothers has previous been champion at Light Flyweight (WBA) and Flyweight (WBC) and at just 24 is one of, if not the, youngest 3 weight world champion we currently have. The Japanese fighter is what you may wish to call an “anti-hero” having been caught directing younger brother Daiki to foul against Daisuke Naito, though he still has a huge following in his homeland. Many former professionals from Japan have slated him for his attitude and boastful nature in which he is rarely complimentary of anyone, despite being hugely popular.

Koki is a skilled operator who turns it on in bursts though did look somewhat slower than the ageing legend Pongsaklek Wonjongkam when the two met last year (in Kameda's only loss) though he seemed heavier handed than the Thai he was quite possibly drained at the weight. Since losing to Wonjongkam (whilst defending the WBC Flyweight title) Kameda has stepped up 2 divisions and now campaigns Bantamweight. In his only fight at 118lbs he took a wide unanimous decision over the experienced Venezuelan Alexander Munoz and dropped him in the final round. Munoz is possibly the best win on Kameda's record having been a 2-time WBA Super Flyweight champion though isn't the only impressive win on his record, the other noteworthy victory came against Japanese fighter Daisuke Naito (the then WBC Flyweight champion).
