The UFC bantamweight championship is on the line Saturday as dominant champion Dominick Cruz defends his title against hungry top contender Demetrious Johnson at UFC Live 6 on the Versus network, which emanates from the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C.
In other action, Pat Barry and Stefan Struve both look to rebound from knockout losses as they clash in a heavyweight special attraction, while Anthony Johnson meets Charlie Brenneman in a critical welterweight tilt.
It's been four years since a UFC championship has been defended on basic cable TV, a streak that will end on Saturday when bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz attempts to hold onto his belt and thwart the challenge of Demetrious Johnson.
The matchup, broadcast on Versus, likely boasts the speediest pair of fighters ever matched for a UFC title. Cruz is known for his fancy footwork and ability to weave in and out of striking distance, while the 5-foot-3 Johnson expertly navigates reach differentials with his own swift feet.
Cruz has been likened to Lyoto Machida in that he has an unconventional style that is relatively difficult to emulate and causes matchup difficulties. But apart from that similarity, their styles are actually quite different. While Machida tends to be very still, leans back out of punching range and waits to aggressively move in for a killshot, Cruz's success is built on his endless movement, flurries of activity and ability to seamlessly transition from standup to takedowns.

The UFC hits the Versus airways once again for another solid free card and as a bonus, the card is headlined with a title fight. This Saturday Oct. 1, 2011, from the Verizon Center, in Washington D.C. Dominick Cruz will make his fourth bantamweight title against Demetrious Johnson.
Since Urijah Faber handed Cruz (18-1) his only professional loss in his WEC debut, Cruz has won nine in a row including a unanimous decision win over Faber his last time out. The unorthodox style of Cruz has given every opponent problems and the task of solving that style now falls on the “Mighty Mouse”. Johnson (9-1) has won his last four bouts since losing a unanimous decision against Brad Pickett in his WEC debut.
The rest of the UFC Live 6 main card has two stylistic bouts and one rematch that will hopefully settle the first fights controversy.
Kickboxer’s Pat Barry (6-3) and the one foot taller Stefan Struve (21-5) will kick it out in hopes to get back in the win column, while avoiding a losing streak. Anthony Johnson (9-3) will hope to make-weight for the third fight on a row when he takes on Charlie Brenneman (14-2). While both have a wrestling background, Brenneman will be the stronger of the two but Johnson has the edge in the striking. Finally Mac Danzig (20-8-1) gets his chance to avenge the controversial los he suffered at UFC 115 to Matt Wiman (13-6). Their first fight was stopped by the referee who though Danzig had went to sleep from a guillotine choke, which obviously wasn’t the case when Danzig immediately protested the stoppage. The two will look for a clean finish to put the controversy behind them.
