Evander Holyfield (born October 19, 1962) is a professional boxer from the United States. He is a former World Undisputed Champion in both cruiserweight and heavyweight divisions, earning him the nickname "The Real Deal". Holyfield won the bronze medal in the Light Heavyweight division at the 1984 Summer Olympics. He is the only boxer to win the World Heavyweight title four times. Holyfield holds notable wins over the likes of Dwight Muhammad Qawi, James Douglas, George Foreman, Larry Holmes, Riddick Bowe, Michael Moorer, John Ruiz, Hasim Rahman and twice defeated Mike Tyson.
Brian Nielsen (born April 1, 1965 in Korsør) is a professional boxer from Denmark. He is the former IBO and IBC World Champion, neither of which has ever been recognized as a legitimate world title. Nielsen is arguably the most popular Danish prize fighter ever, and during his career he defeated a number of famous boxers - all of whom were in their late 30's and 40's and on the downslide of their careers, such as Larry Holmes.Nielsen has a scheduled fight against legendary boxer and current WBF heavyweight world champion, Evander Holyfield on May 2011***

It might be the same old story and same old song and dance, but every time Evander Holyfield fights, it needs to be said.

Evander Holyfield should have retired years ago. And his quest to once again become "world heavyweight champion" is crazier than it is admirable.

Holyfield is now 48 years old. This Saturday in Denmark, he will face 46-year-old Brian Nielsen. Nielsen (64-2, 43 KO) carries one of the emptiest "great records" in notable boxing history, and years ago earned the unflattering nickname "Danish Pastry" among diehard boxing fans.

Most worrisome is that at his advanced age, Nielsen hasn't fought in nine years, yet both he and Holyfield were able to pass whatever medical standards there are in Denmark. Holyfield had his license taken away after disastrous 2004 loss to Larry Donald. At that time, the New York State Athletic Commission felt that Holyfield should no longer be allowed to enter a pro ring.

That was seven years ago. Five years ago, the questionable commission in Texas re-licensed "The Real Deal," who then won four fights in a row (one questionable against Fres Oquendo) before landing a 2007 fight against WBO titlist Sultan Ibragimov. That fight was dominated by Ibragimov, himself hardly a special fighter, and the fight wound up most memorable because of the PPV commercial that tried unsuccessfully to sell the fight to American audiences:

It is hard to believe that a manFormer heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield (43-10-2, 28 KO’s) faces Denmark’s Brian Nielsen (64-2, 43 KO’s) in a scheduled 12 round bout this Saturday night in what amounts to be an old timer’s fight at the Koncenthuset, in Copenhagen, Denmark. How this fight is even taking place is the question.

Nielsen, 46, hasn’t fought in over nine years since beating Uriah Grant by an eight round decision in 2002. Holyfield is coming off of a questionable 3rd round no contest in his last fight against journeyman Sherman Williams in January. Holyfield was badly rocked by Williams in the 3rd round and was taking right after right hand and staggering. The fight was stopped in between rounds due to a small cut over Holyfield’s left eye as a result of a head clash.
Holyfield claimed he couldn’t see out of the eye but the cut didn’t look like a bad one and the time of this was suspicious, as Holyfield had been badly hurt by Williams and looked to be on the verge of being knocked out. The fight was then stopped and ruled a no contest. Williams wanted a rematch to prove that he can hurt Holyfield again and take him out. However, Holyfield has shown no interest in fighting Williams and instead has moved on to the ring rusty and old Nielsen.

Holyfield is hoping that a win over Nielsen will lead to a title shot against one of the heavyweight champions. In an interview at Sky Sports, Holyfield said “If I win, I am moving to the next level. I am hoping to get a championship bout with other guys with other belts.”

How Holyfield can think that beating an inactive fighter like Nielsen is enough for him to get a title shot is beyond me. Nielsen never faced anyone with a pulse during his 66 fight career until facing and getting beaten by an old Mike Tyson in 2001. Nielsen’s record was totally inflated but after all these years, it’s silly to see Holyfield facing him and think this should lead to him getting a title shot. Nielsen, of course, isn’t ranked in the top 15.
