ANTHONY Mundine never saw the left hook that decked him coming from Garth Wood.

The unheralded Wood matched artistry with brutality in his execution of a sizzling combination of punches that took months in the planning. Devised by trainer Billy Hussein and cornerman Jeff Fenech, it planted the most unlikely of knockouts right on Mundine's chin.

Wood, having trapped Mundine on the ropes on Wednesday night, threw punches from angles that would have baffled Pythagoras.

A right cross followed by a right rip had stiffened Mundine like a well prepared pavlova, then the left hook reduced the world champion to a marshmallow.

Wood credits hours of watching tapes of Mundine fights with Hussein and Fenech, the former triple world champion, for the game plan that ultimately led to Mundine's downfall in Sydney.

"Jeffery would come into the gym from day to day and give his opinion," Wood said yesterday.

"And every night before I went to bed I'd watch most of Mundine's fights when he was at his best against the likes of Antwun Echols and Danny Green.

"But then I watched his later fights where I thought he started to fall away against Ryan Waters and Daniel Geale. I watched the Geale fight pretty closely, the way he cut the angles."

Fenech and Hussein proved great teachers to Wood, who grew up in working class Alexandria, the ex-footballer who was graded by South Sydney rugby league at just 16.

"I virtually grew up in Newtown Police Boys club watching Jeff Fenech and Jeff Harding train for their world titles," Wood said.

"I always had it in me of wanting to be a boxer, but . . . Dad was never keen on me wanting to be a fighter." Under the guidance of Fenech and Hussein, Wood is expected to be given a title shot in the middle of next year. He's not ruled out a rematch with Mundine, but adds, "on my terms".

"Jeff has been a close friend of mine and my family, even when I was playing football, he was supportive of whatever I wanted to have a go at," Wood said.

He said he had the self-belief before Wednesday's fight that he could beat Mundine, despite being rank outsider.

"I later heard from Khoder (Nasser), Mundine's manager, that the left hook was a lucky punch, but if there's a tip I can give Anthony it would be to disregard anything his manager says, because I don't think he's got a clue about boxing," he said.

"If anything he should listen to his old man (Tony). I'd been preparing for this fight for 12 months, and day after day I was going over in my head how I was going to take down Mundine."

For Wood, who has gone from being The Contender reality television series winner, to having pulled off a most improbable upset, the hard work now begins, in and out of the ring.

Away from the hours of training, he set about repairing his fractured relationship with partner Melissa, and has started to see more of his two daughters, Mia, 11, and Billie, 8.

GARTH WOOD controversially floored Anthony Mundine in the fifth round of their fight at Acer Arena last night to score one of the biggest upsets in Australian boxing history.

It had been an ugly fight, dominated by complaints from Mundine about Wood's wrestling tactics and blows to the back of the head, but when the three-time world champion fell to the canvas 58 seconds into the fifth round there was stunned silence among the big crowd. It appeared that a blow to the back of the head sent Mundine to the canvas.

The rematch is official with Anthony Mundine vs. Garth Wood II set for April 13 at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre. Reality show winner Garth Wood caused one of the biggest boxing upsets in Australian history when he knocked out Mundine late last year.

ANTHONY MUNDINE will seek to avenge his shock defeat to Garth Wood last December in a rematch at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre on April 13.

That loss had him slip from the World Boxing Association's No.2 ranked junior-middleweight contender to No.9. The pair will announce details of the fight at a news conference today, where Mundine is expected to face questioning about whether his career is on the line if beaten again by the former South Sydney fullback who earned his shot against the three-time world champion by winning The Contender reality television boxing series.

The fifth-round knockout has cost Mundine a potential world title bout, while elevating Wood into ninth position in the WBA's middleweight rankings. Before his December 8 bout with Mundine, which was fought at middleweight, Wood was not ranked in the top 15 by the main boxing organisations in any division.

Mundine, who had moved to junior-middleweight following last January's win over Robert Medley, was ranked the No.2 contender after wins over Carlos Adan Jerez and Ryan Waters. Had he beaten Wood, the 35-year-old former NRL star was set to bring WBA junior-middleweight champion Rigoberto Alvarez to Australia early this year.

He then planned to head to the US with a world title and train under the legendary Angelo Dundee, who was in Muhammad Ali's corner for all but two of his 61 fights. Dundee, who Mundine knows through Russell Crowe, also trained Sugar Ray Leonard, among others.

However, Mundine's loss to Wood enabled the WBA's No.1 contender, Austin Trout, to challenge Alvarez and the American won a unanimous points decision in Mexico on February 5.

Mundine will be keen to fight Trout but he must first overcome Wood, who shocked the boxing world when he knocked The Man to the canvas in the fifth round of their bout at Acer Arena.
