David Haye does not deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as past champions such as Mike Tyson, Riddick Bowe, Lennox Lewis or Larry Holmes. The common misconception touted about by the media is that David Haye represents a new dawn for the heavyweight division. I agree, he has talent and can punch, but he is little more than an opportunist looking to capitalise in a division devoid of quality and charismatic fighters. Up until now the paying public have been gullible enough to believe the hype, what is the alternative?

Adam Booth recently expressed a damning verdict on Audley Harrison and poured scorn on his chances of A-Force defeating the Hayemaker. “He’s never boxed anyone in the top 40 and never produced in the ring. Audley’s only hope would be that he finds his bollocks and David’s chin at the same time.

If world titles were won by talking a good game, Audley Harrison would be ranked as one of the greatest fighters of all time, unfortunately for Audley that isn’t the case. It’s fair to say that Harrison has failed to deliver on the promises he’s made throughout his thirty-one fight career and has created a legacy of failure and embarrassment rather than achievement.

This Saturday presents him with the chance of proving that some of his comments were based on substance rather than just being irrational bluster caused by his inflated sense of self. He challenges David Haye, no shrinking violet himself, at the M.E.N Arena for the W.B.A heavyweight title.

The build-up to this fight has been one of the most tedious and repetitive ear-molesting experiences I’ve ever been subjected to. I’ve never been a fan of smack talk - I’m old fashioned, I prefer boxers to be respectful prior to the fight, knock seven shades out of each other during the fight and then shake hands afterwards.

A fight which many people considered to be somewhat of a joke when it was announced is almost upon us. On Saturday night in Manchester, England, former friends David Haye and Audley Harrison will step into the ring for the second defense of Haye’s WBA heavyweight title.

As the fight has gotten closer, many people are now of the opinion that Harrison has a good chance of pulling off the upset. The argument is that Harrison is a big puncher, particularly with his straight left hand and Haye’s chin is less than granite.

Certainly anything can happen in heavyweight boxing where one punch can turn the fight around or simply end it. Let’s take a look at the pros and cons for both fighters.

David Haye

Pros

Haye clearly has the advantage in the speed department, he is quick both with his hands and also with his feet.

Haye has one of the highest KO ratios in the sport currently. He was even able to wobble the giant Russian Nickolai Valuev.

Haye is arguably the fresher of the two fighters given that he has only just turned 30 years of age whereas Harrison is 39. However, Harrison begun his boxing career later than most and doesn’t have too many miles on the clock.

Cons

Haye’s stamina has been called into question in the past. He gassed out against Carl Thompson in his only pro career defeat. He started off the first couple of rounds throwing many punches and hurting Thompson badly only to tired quickly and get stopped by the older man. He did subsequently reveal that he was cutting corners in training and underprepared for the vetern Thompson.

Haye’s chin is suspicious, he has been down against Lolenga Mock, the aforementioned Thompson, Jean Marc-Mormeck and some people consider that he was floored by Monte Barrett although others consider that a slip. He was also stopped in the amateurs.
